A note from Executive director, Robin Byrne

Updated: Jul 16, 2019

I am very excited as I embark on my new position as Executive Director of our great community theatre especially as we worked so hard to recover from a dire situation and did so in miraculous style.

We now look to the future, a bright future and with the continued support of our amazing volunteers we can keep the momentum going and grow from strength to strength. By name we are a Regional community theatre and we will live up to that title by expanding our footprint beyond Sioux Falls. This November we will take a revival of Steel Magnolias on tour in SE South Dakota. With good planning and strong management of resources, relationships and processes there is no reason why we cannot grow to the same stature as other regional community theatres in Omaha and Minneapolis and that is precisely what we aim to do.

I aim to secure our financial future by seeking out donations and sponsors from businesses and philanthropists in our community to grow our endowment investment to a size that will help us to become self sustainable. This objective will consume much of my time and I will reach out to each and everyone of you to contact me with your suggestions of where I might find receptive contacts who might be sympathetic to our goal of providing opportunities for local people to develop their talents and deliver high quality theatre to an appreciative community.

By raising our standards of professionalism both onstage and in the technical areas, we will increase attendances, attract great talent and create an even stronger volunteer base. Initial conversations with our new partners at the Washington Pavilion leave me feeling very positive that this new relationship will help us achieve that objective. We can expect to see and hear improved lighting and sound when Mamma Mia takes to the stage in a couple of months. We have signed a new lease and will be moving into a larger scene shop close by the present one early in November. I will be shouting out for volunteers to roll up with your vans and trucks to create a “wagon train” to help us make that move as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you have not already done so, please “like” our facebook page Sioux Empire Community Theatre to ensure that you can follow our progress and receive important information.

The Orpheum will be kept locked when not in use for productions but my office is accessible from Phillips Ave with a door onto the street so just knock if you want to pop by and offer to help in any way. It's the office with the image from Les Miserable on the window.

Finally with Season 17 in mind, please buy and encourage others to buy season tickets. They are a great gift idea for family and friends for birthdays and anniversaries and they are the financial foundations of our future. I can't wait for this season to get under way with auditions for Mamma Mia on Monday, August 12th and Tuesday, August 13th at the Orpheum. Show up and show us that you love this community and that you love musical theatre. I'm looking forward to a great season with a great group of people.
