It was my one year anniversary of being in this role on July 1st and it’s been quite a year. It started off with summer camps then Mamma Mia. We took Steel Magnolias on the road to Madison, Mitchell and Dell Rapids then performed Tuesdays with Morrie followed by Lend Me A Tenor. We were on a roll and Season 17 looked set to top the success of Season 16, surely Beauty and the Beast would ensure that we knocked it out of the Park. I went to visit family in the UK in February and I saw how seriously the UK was taking the Covid-19 pandemic and I suddenly had my doubts about whether or not we would get to perform Beauty & the Beast. Unfortunately, those doubts were realized when the City closed the Orpheum to the public just as our first rehearsal was about to start. We had a successful year but if we had performed Beauty and the Beast, we would have knocked it out of the park.
We have delayed the start of Season 18 until December and will be announcing the season line up very soon. We expect season tickets to go on sale sometime in August and we really need you to show your support by becoming a member and buying a season ticket or renewing your membership. All shows will be performed under CDC guidelines and all shows will have social distancing controls in the auditorium. To make up for the restricted audience sizes, we will do 15 performances of each show opening Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday matinee, Saturday evening, Sunday Matinee and one Sunday Evening performance. A Broadway schedule that will need your vital support to ensure our revenues remain strong.
I have every confidence that with your support and Covid-19 permitting, we can really have a successful Season 18 using these safety measures and adopting our 15 performance strategy. Keep your eyes open for the Season 18 announcement and please purchase tickets early to help us cover the costs of bringing live theatre to the Orpheum.
